We had already been impressed, during our first visit to the Czech capital by the books of the Institute presenting the whole scope of performing arts in the Republic, from extensive thematic surveys to even minimal, 2-page leaflets (!), one of which we also kept as a model of its kind.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2286\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2286\" style=\"width: 275px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.criticscorner.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Happy-Prince-3-photo-courtesy-Lampion-Theatre.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2286\" src=\"https:\/\/www.criticscorner.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Happy-Prince-3-photo-courtesy-Lampion-Theatre.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2286\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Happy Prince 3 &#8211; photo courtesy Lampion Theatre<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Having missed an introductory visit to the Puppet Museum in Pilsen, we nevertheless followed an intensive and in many ways illuminating 3-day program of performances. Two of the most articulate and finished productions were due to the already historic <strong>DRAC Theatre<\/strong> <strong>and International Institute of Figurative Theatre<\/strong>, imbued by the traditions of Eastern Bohemia, which celebrated in 2018 its 60 years of wide range productions. Its seat is in <em><strong>Hradec Kr\u00e1lov\u00e9<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0, where we attended their aspect of <strong>Jack London<\/strong>\u2019s \u00ab<strong><em>White Fang<\/em><\/strong>\u00bb, a version for children and adults alike, interestingly using actors instead of puppets as the dogs of the piece, in order to maximize empathy of his mainly young public with the strong messages. It was an intensive performance, combining craftsmanship of micro puppetry projections on a video wall with clarity of ideals, especially in times of global anger and hate politics.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2296\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2296\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.criticscorner.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/studio-damuza-ja-ty-4.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2296\" src=\"https:\/\/www.criticscorner.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/studio-damuza-ja-ty-4.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"230\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2296\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">studio-damuza-ja-ty-4<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0 We had a second chance to sample DRAC\u2019s remarkable achievement, this time at the <strong>Minor Theatre<\/strong> in Prague, \u00ab<em>primarily associated with puppet and children\u2019s theatre<\/em>\u00bb, beautifully situated in its new modern building of Vodi\u010dkova Street and one of the main venues of our Event. \u00ab<em>Inspired by the experience of children with Asperger\u2019s syndrome<\/em>\u00bb, \u00ab<strong><em>Mimon<\/em><\/strong>\u00bb (Oddball) presents a puppet figure with their behaviour traits as a creature from outer space, who evades its planet in course of overheating to seek refuge elsewhere, successively to planets bearing the Greek names of \u00ab\u0393\u03ad\u03bb\u03c9\u03c2\u00bb (Laughter), \u00ab\u039a\u03ac\u03bb\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2\u00bb (Beauty) and \u00ab\u0386\u03c1\u03b7\u03c2\u00bb (Mars). The inimical reaction of its inhabitants to the visitor\u2019s good willed incomprehension will be appeased by\u00a0 Mimon\u2019s landing to a 4<sup>th<\/sup> one, where he meets someone eager to become his lifelong understanding friend and companion. DRAC\u2019 s performance was visually strong, with masterful use of puppets and demanding electronic music with vocals performed on stage. They enriched the plot with two additional characters as mediators of the original\u2019s message for a performance that strikes a happy medium in the combination of puppets and actors on stage. Forman also directed and signed the atmospheric scenery, sensitively lighted by <em><strong>Jan \u010cernohorsk\u00fd<\/strong><\/em>. With actors forming a well integrated, interactive ensemble and with quality original music by <strong>Daniel Wunsch<\/strong>, executed with flair on stage, this was children\u2019s music puppet theatre of the most serious order, a treat for adults as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2292\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2292\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.criticscorner.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/L\u00ed\u0161e\u0148-Theatre\u2019s-\u00abBound-by-Grass_foto_vit_madr-courtesy-performczech.cz_.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2292\" src=\"https:\/\/www.criticscorner.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/L\u00ed\u0161e\u0148-Theatre\u2019s-\u00abBound-by-Grass_foto_vit_madr-courtesy-performczech.cz_.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"230\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2292\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">L\u00ed\u0161e\u0148 Theatre\u2019s \u00abBound by Grass_foto_vit_madr- courtesy performczech.cz<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We wish the same importance had been accorded to music in <em><strong>Vratislav \u0160r\u00e1mek<\/strong><\/em>\u2019s adoption of \u00ab<strong>The Bartered Bride<\/strong>\u00bb by <em><strong>Bed\u0159ich Smetana<\/strong><\/em> <em>(1824-1884)<\/em>, the Czech national opera <em>par excellence<\/em> and an international masterpiece in its own right, composed in a folk-like, readily accessible idiom. And that not as an encouragement of a certain educational policy, in any case irrelevant to independent theatres as this one, but from genuine conviction, especially since <strong>Otakar Ostr\u010dil<\/strong>, incidentally the conductor of the opera\u2019s first complete recording (1933, originally on a set of 15 gramophone records [HMV AN 801-15], later transferred to lp by Supraphon [1016 3201-03 G, no longer available]; cd transfers on Naxos Historical [S.110098-99] and Russian Compact Disc [RCD70041]), was one of the two musicians involved\u00a0 in the foundation of the <strong>Puppet Theatre Arts Education<\/strong> in Prague, back in 1914, as stated in \u00ab<strong><em>The magical World of Puppets<\/em><\/strong>\u00bb, a beautiful 2013 edition of the <strong>Hroudin Puppet Theatre <\/strong>Museum, generously handed to us during our informative visit there.\u00a0 So, in spite of Smetana\u2019s appearance in person and as a puppet \u00a0on stage of Minor Theatre, his music came in too sparsely and in between the narrated story, otherwise enacted with conviction and skill by actors and musicians of the 66 years old <strong>Puppet Theatre Ostrava <\/strong>alike.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2282\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2282\" style=\"width: 403px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.criticscorner.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Bartered-Bride-by-Ostrava-Puppet-Theatre-5-Foto-Roman-Pol\u00e1\u0161ek.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2282\" src=\"https:\/\/www.criticscorner.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Bartered-Bride-by-Ostrava-Puppet-Theatre-5-Foto-Roman-Pol\u00e1\u0161ek.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"403\" height=\"269\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.criticscorner.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Bartered-Bride-by-Ostrava-Puppet-Theatre-5-Foto-Roman-Pol\u00e1\u0161ek.jpg 535w, https:\/\/www.criticscorner.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Bartered-Bride-by-Ostrava-Puppet-Theatre-5-Foto-Roman-Pol\u00e1\u0161ek-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 403px) 100vw, 403px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2282\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bartered Bride by Ostrava Puppet Theatre 5 &#8211; Foto Roman Pol\u00e1\u0161ek<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0In the same frame of performances though, we were enthralled by the freshness and enthusiasm of student formation \u00ab<strong>The Czechoslovakian Sticks<\/strong>\u00bb with their purely micro &#8211; puppet play \u00ab<strong><em>The Smallest of Sami<\/em><\/strong>\u00bb, making much out of literally very little and very small. Witnessed in direct proximity it was a revelatory and moving experience ignited by youthful passion. We regret our reduced comprehension for \u00ab<strong><em>Emil<\/em><\/strong>\u00bb, a joint production of an apparently interesting <em>Grand Guignol<\/em> spectacle, due to lack of English subtitles, but we enjoyed \u00ab<strong><em>Spa<\/em><\/strong>\u00bb, also presented in the other main venue of the Event, <strong>Theatre X10<\/strong>, an alternative theatrical space middle in Prague. The production, by \u00ab<strong>vi.TVOR<\/strong>\u00bb free-form collective, draws humorously on experiences of the director and her grandmother from working in such institutions and was enacted with conviction from actors and 3 young and talented brass musicians on stage. In the same venue we enjoyed the humorous and tender \u00ab<strong><em>Zuma<\/em><\/strong>\u00bb by the versatile <strong>Continuo Theatre<\/strong>, founded in 1995, whose members managed to relish genuine, uplifting yet deep rooted scenic magic.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2290\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2290\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.criticscorner.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/karneval_zvirat_foto_vojtech_brtnicky-2_mala.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2290\" src=\"https:\/\/www.criticscorner.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/karneval_zvirat_foto_vojtech_brtnicky-2_mala.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"230\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2290\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">karneval_zvirat_foto_vojtech_brtnicky-2_mala<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Of more historically focused interest proved Brno based <strong>L\u00ed\u0161e\u0148 Theatre<\/strong>\u2019s \u00ab<strong><em>Bound by Grass<\/em><\/strong>\u00bb, drawing on oriental figures and wisdom, and \u00ab<strong><em>Go for it, Honey<\/em><\/strong>\u00bb, in a free, contemporary \u00a0restitution of baroque practices. Last but not necessarily least and in their special way, as targeted to children, \u00ab<strong><em>Animal Carnival<\/em><\/strong>\u00bb, freely drawing on Camille Saint-Saens\u2019s composition by <em><strong>Barbora L\u00e1talov\u00e1<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0 <strong>&amp; comp.<\/strong> (presented at the <strong>Ponec Dance Venue<\/strong>) and, especially \u00ab<strong><em>Me, You and That<\/em><\/strong>\u00bb (Minor Theatre), aiming to very early age babies and infants, splendidly conceived and executed by <strong>Studio Dam\u00faza<\/strong> (<em><strong>Karolina K\u0159\u00ed\u017ekov\u00e1<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>Andrej Lyga<\/strong><\/em>), exercised their special appeal. All in all a rewarding and in many cases illuminating experience , full of insight and graced by warm hospitality!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2284\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2284\"
