President of the Greek Drama and Music Critics\u2019 Union (est. 1928)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>Mettrin as a holistic architectural and cultural concept<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Mettrin does not mean anything specific! It just may be some cryptic combination of letters and their latent meanings. Yet, it corresponds to a nascent and ambitious effort for a harmonized coexistence of first-class wellness hotel hospitality with totally up-to-date, moderately sized multi-faceted cultural productions and guest performances without harassing the nearby idyllic B\u00e1nk lake, blessed with peaceful stillness and a still thriving nature. But let us take the story from its pleasantly improbable beginning.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><a name=\"Bookmark\"><\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">It was in the frame of the latest Kosovo-Albania Theatre Showcase we had the opportunity of contact with two special cultural ambassadors of Hungarian contemporary theatre and performing arts, internationally acclaimed director <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>Zolt\u00e1n Bal\u00e1zs<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> and his all-round Egeria of a \u00abproducer\u00bb, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>Sylvia <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Husz\u00e1r<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">. Little we knew then of an emerging new institution, financially independent of state and due to the artistic sensibility of the art loving family of Messrs. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>Ferenc Karacs<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>Julianna Karacs-Zagyva <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">and their young and handsome offsprings<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">, beautifully situated at the lake village of B\u00e1nk, barely an hour by car from Budapest. Still less we knew then about the intention for this cultural frame to form a holistic combination of still-to-be-programmed cultural activities, hosted in a nearby new and fully ecologically sustainable complex of non-monumental and internally flexible buildings, sitting lightly on the lake vicinity.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">The friendly atmosphere of our reception, as members of a multinational 10-member \u00ab<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>Foreign Theatre Delegation<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00bb, invited to participate to the <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>Opening Ceremony of the Mettrin Arts Centre<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">, could not conceal the seriousness of purpose around the new project. The importance of the occasion became even more obvious during its preceding press conference, featuring first and foremost a presentation of the new premises and their architectural and ecological philosophy by the well-known Hungarian architect <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>\u00c1rp\u00e1d Ferdin\u00e1nd<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> of \u00ab<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>Ferdinand &amp; Ferdinand Architects<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00bb Firm, followed to the fore by an enthusiastic <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Bal\u00e1zs,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> who also presented his vision in front of a select public headed by the initiator and his family and featuring much of Budapest\u2019s artistic cream in selections from poetry, instrumental and vocal music, as well as nostalgic yet imaginative dance numbers, French chanson evergreens and much more. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><a name=\"Bookmark1\"><\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">The special evening was introduced by the well-known Kossuth-Prize Winner actress <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Ildik\u00f3<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em> <em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>B\u00e1ns\u00e1gi<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">, who introduced the Ceremony with the <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>World Theatre Day<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> message of Greek director <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>Theodoros Terzopoulos<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">. After a greeting by the new Director General of the <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>International Theatre Institute\/UNESCO<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Ms. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>Zhongwen CHEN<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">, the evening came to its artistic highpoint with a series of multinational songs, introduced by the Greek one \u00abMavra mou Matia\u00bb, movingly interpreted by Transylvania-born <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>Kinga <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>\u00dajhelyi<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>,<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> tastefully yet intensely accompanied by Armenian <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>David Yengibarian<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">, a musician well acquainted with Greek Rebetiko and more traditions, as it became obvious during personal contact after the Event.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Singer, film and musical actress <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>Eszter <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>B\u00edr\u00f3<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> and her multitalented accompanist <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>S\u00e1ndor F\u00f6d\u0151<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> offered sensational Friday evening Sabbath prayer \u00abin a thread of song\u00bb, followed by violinist <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>J\u00falia<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em> <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>Rabovay<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> and cellist <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>\u00c1gnes K\u00e1llay<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> in the second movement (<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Tr\u00e8s vif<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">) of Maurice Ravel\u2019s only sonata for this combination, first performed in 1922 and dedicated to Claude Debussy, a really awkward choice for such a mysticist programmatic frame. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>Anna<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> <em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Gy\u00f6rgi<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">\u2019s recitation of an excerpt from \u00abSong of Myself\u00bb by Walt Whitman was followed by a rock music sample, \u00abSong of Martti\u00bb, composed by punk rock singer <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>S\u00e1muel<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em> <em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>P\u00e1sztor<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">, who also accompanied vocally and from the electric guitar his singer sister <strong>Anna P\u00e1sztor<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">. Edith Piaf in Hungarian was offered by such all-round artistic personalities as actress and singer singer <strong>Ildik\u00f3 Keresztes <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0accompanied on the piano by composer and pianist <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>P\u00e9ter<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><b> <\/b><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Fur\u00e1k<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">. Following them, the stage was occupied by the accurately described as \u00ab<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>superb musician \u2026 in many ways unique and working solo or with supreme beatboxer Jammal<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00bb <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>Edina Szirtes<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> <em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>M\u00f3kus<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> for an instrumental and vocal demonstration without parallel in our humble experience. According to the 2025 update of <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>szinhaz.online<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><i> <\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Zolt\u00e1n Bal\u00e1zs is a multi-faceted artist, being an actor, director, set designer, and theater director. As a sought-after director worldwide, he has staged productions in the United States, Bosnia and Herzegovina, France, Kosovo, Poland, Germany, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Romania\u2019s dynamic theater scene. In this respect and by denying to cede to a predictable holocaust solemnity, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Bal\u00e1zs<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> enriched the rattling intensity of the <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>parola scenica<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> and its mostly forceful but also -at times- frightfully intimate, barely audible, declamation with further layers of scenic action. So, intermittently to scenes and \/ or third-party appearances by characters who tried to pull the protagonist out of his illusion, the play was enhanced by evergreen and mostly sentimental musical numbers from the dark decades between 1920s and 1950s, contradicting and yet relieving the relentless plot, first and foremost, because of the high-quality singing by our already familiar <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\">\u00dajhelyi<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">The action took place in the frame of an abstract, light to handle scenery, lighted discreetly with moody use of alternating colours, and served by costumes conform to periods and situations in an aesthetically rewarding synthesis. This was a performance where proportions, analogies, sound and visual elements, including dynamics, presented a painstakingly accurate result of almost cinematic exactitude, without betraying in the least the theatrical directness of a spectacle that further incorporated in a most esoteric way the body theatre of an expressive human puppet choreography and its dialogue with the Puppetmaster as well as with other characters and, sometimes, even brief yet aptly contributing sounds. And if our remarks should misguide to an assumption of soulless technicalities, we have to be adamant in the conclusion that we shared a deeply moving theatrical and aesthetic experience haunting us Penelope as conceived and narrated by the distinguished Canadian author Margaret Atwood in her 2005 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00ab<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">The Penelopiad<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: In 2011 he managed extensive bilingual texts and overall supervision to a lavish 4-cd set, issued by \u201cThe Friends of Music Society\u201d of the Athens Megaron Concert Hall and devoted to hitherto unpublished recordings from the archive of the late (mezzo) soprano Arda Mandikian, a close collaborator of Benjamin Britten and Sir Peter Pears and the Dido in both the first ever complete performance of Berlioz\u2019s <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>Les Troyens<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">, in Oxford (1950), and the subsequent first complete recording of its second part, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>Les Troyens a Carthage<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">, under the baton of Hermann Scherchen. The set was favorably reviewed by such prestigious international periodicals as International Record Review, Opera magazine, The Record Collector and Classical Recordings Quarterly and was accorded the 2012 \u201cGina Bachauer International Foundation\u201d Record Prize.
